What are Waves and Sound?

Speaker producing sound waves with water wave pattern for Waves and Sound in Physics

Waves and Sound are important topics in Physics that help us understand vibrations, wave motion, and how sound travels from one place to another.

Waves transfer energy from one place to another. They can travel through water, ropes, springs, and other materials, while sound waves travel through substances such as air, water, and solids.

Sound is produced by vibrations, and oscillations are repeated back-and-forth movements. This chapter explains how waves move, how sound is produced and heard, and how vibrations and oscillations are connected to wave motion.

Waves

A wave is a disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another without permanently carrying matter with it.

Waves may travel through a material medium, as water waves and sound waves do, or through empty space, as light waves do. Important wave properties include amplitude, wavelength, frequency, and speed.

Water ripples, waves travelling along a rope, and light from the Sun are familiar examples of waves.

Sound

Sound is produced when an object vibrates.

The vibrations make nearby particles move back and forth, passing energy from one particle to the next. Sound requires a medium such as air, water, or a solid to travel.

Pitch depends mainly on frequency, while loudness is related to the amplitude of the vibration. Speech, music, echoes, and the sounds of machines are all produced by vibrations.

Oscillations

An oscillation is a repeated back-and-forth movement around a central or equilibrium position.

A swinging pendulum, a vibrating guitar string, and a tuning fork are examples of oscillating systems. The time taken for one complete oscillation is called the time period, and the number of oscillations per second is called the frequency.

Oscillations are closely related to waves because many waves begin with a vibrating or oscillating source.
